On the 8th of March, I was delighted to be invited to talk about creating a ‘rape-free world’. Some of the people I most admire were present, including Jude Kelly CBE (founder of the global movement called Women of the World, or WOW), Marai Larasi (founder of Imkaan and global activist), and Winnie M Li (prize winning author of Dark Chapter and founder of Clear Lines Festival for survivors of sexual violence). The event was part of WOW UK Festival’s 2021 International Women’s Day.
It was one of those discussions that could have continued for hours. We debated some of the most urgent questions for girls and women today, including the history of trafficking, the enduring legacy of slavery, and intersectional equality. How can we take steps towards a world where everyone can walk the streets without fear? What can a knowledge of history contribute to anti-rape initiatives today? Since the most effective way to effect change is through survivor-led activism, how can we encourage inclusive and safe spaces to talk to and learn from each other?
