On Wednesday 29 November 2023, SHaME will be hosting the premiere of documentary film SHaME: Stories of Survival, which follows the stories of four survivors of sexual violence as they reflect on the aftercare they received and call for more awareness and inclusion in sexual violence services.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring SHaME’s Principal Investigator Professor Emerita Joanna Bourke, Filmmaker Sophie MacCorquodale, Survivor and Contributor of Music Maddy Brodrick, award-winning speaker Maisha Sumah, Writer and Journalist Lucia Osborne-Crowley and Founder of London Trans Pride Lucia Blayke.

Join us at Rich Mix Cinema for the official premiere of documentary film SHaME: Stories of Survival, and hear from the director, survivors and academics as they share their perspectives on the complexities of navigating the aftermaths of sexual violence. The film, which was co-produced by SHaME and Sophie MacCorquodale, explores experiences of aftercare for survivors of sexual abuse and talks to individuals and organisations who are providing support for survivors who have previously struggled to access medical and psychiatric services. Going beyond the myth of a single white female attacked by a stranger, a diverse group of survivors talk about surviving sexual violence and its aftermaths.
Taking place during the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, the evening will be an opportunity to celebrate survivors’ stories of survival, raise awareness of the links between sexual violence, medicine and psychiatry, think about what we can learn from centring survivors’ perspectives and reflect on the use of film as advocacy from the perspectives of survivors, activists and academics.
The film screening will take place in Cinema 2, followed by a panel discussion with Q&A and drinks reception in The Mix & Bar. Rich Mix is an accessible venue and the event will be BSL interpreted.

SPEAKERS:
Joanna Bourke is Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London, Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is the Principal Investigator of the SHaME project. She is the prize-winning author of fifteen books, as well as over 100 articles in academic journals. Among others, she is the author of Rape: A History from the 1860s to the Present (2007), What it Means To Be Human: Reflections from 1791 to the Present (2011), and The Story of Pain: From Prayer to Painkillers (2014). Reaktion Books published Disgrace: Global Reflections on Sexual Violence in July 2022. Her books have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Turkish, and Greek. She is a frequent contributor to TV and radio shows, and a regular correspondent for newspapers.
Lucia Blayke is a London-based filmmaker and advocate for trans rights. In 2018 she started London Trans Pride and Harpies, the UK’s first LGBT+ strip club. She is committed to normalising trans identity and has been featured in Vogue, The Guardian, Channel 4, BBC News and more.
Maddy Brodrick Maddy is a queer singer, songwriter, creative director and activist based between London and Somerset. Being a survivor of sexual and domestic abuse, living with a chronic illness (M.E) and being neurodivergent has sparked Maddy’s desire to use her art and voice as a way to make change in the world and speak up for those who may not have the tools to do so themselves. The main focus of her work is on healing and education, whether that be through the songs she writes with her band the Argonautz or through her shamanic meditation practises in ceremony.
Maisha Sumah is an international multi award winning speaker / mental health advocate who inspires, empowers and influences thousands of individuals through her platform She Walks in Value, by delivering motivational talks worldwide and seminars pus workshops, one to one mentoring and a variety of events with community events being a popular one. She has also been featured in magazines and books. Plus, she has done TV / radio interviews with SKY, BBC radio London, BBC evening news and BBC Nottingham. and featured in evening news standard, yahoo news and metro newspaper and telegraph on how she overcame her traumatic life experiences to who she is today. Recently she has been elected as chair for the VAWG forum in two boroughs in London. Additionally, she has been chosen as the youngest mental health expert representative for the BME communities within the NHS to talk about solutions for mental health. As a young women’s activist, she has delivered talks and partaken in events in Houses of Lords & Houses of Parliament and City Hall to create the change she and other survivors want to see. To add she has been listed within the 50 most inspiring black women in the UK and much more! She was also invited to speak by Women of the World at their launch event and was recognised by the Queen consort, UK former Prime Minster’s wife and the former female first president of Australia for her bravery and powerful story telling. The courageous and trailblazing spirit that she has ready to make the difference in any given opportunity to be a real model and pass hope to others is what makes her stand out! Helping others to find their voice.
Sophie MacCorquodale is a London-based documentary filmmaker and photographer producing high-quality content, promos and documentaries for clients from the worlds of fashion, beauty, art, music and the community sector, including The British Council, Stella McCartney, Levi’s and Ganni to name a few. She studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College London, cut her teeth as a video producer for Net-A-Porter and was CEO of production company SMACC Films.
